My First Pregnancy Part 2

As the days passed I became weaker and weaker and sore from lying bed the whole time, beside my family I had two constant visitors, and young orderly called Peter and an old nurse Barbara.

They would always drop in whenever they were on shift and try to cheer me up.

On the 9th of April 1970 Peter called past joking that he was going on  holidays and if I did not do something before 10.30 that night I had better not do anything for three weeks until he got back.

The Doctor in the room at the time scoffed and said not to be stupid I had 6 weeks to go.

That day did not feel any different to any other day over the last few weeks, my husband and parents took turns during the day to stay with me, the doctors and nursing staff came in and out taking blood test and adjusting the drip.

Barbara dropping in to say she was working and would come and see me again at tea time and when she finished her shift at 9 o’clock.

My husband finally left about 8:30 PM telling the nursing stuff on the way out that I was uncomfortable and fidgeting  and he thought they may like to give me something to help me get a good nights rest.

Luckily for me and my baby Barbara arrived at nine as promised, just as a younger doctor walked in the door with the injection to help me rest.

Barbara offered to administer the needle before she went if he would just give us some time for a short visit, Thankfully he agreed.

I remember we chatted about everything and nothing , I saw her constantly looking at her watch but took no notice, then at 9:30 PM as cool as a cucumber she says to me you’re in labour girlie I need to ring the doctor.

I had no pain, I felt no different than I had for the past few weeks the only sign that alerted a well-trained nurse and mother of three was my fidgeting that was getting more and more frequent. Recalling the panic among the staff getting me ready to be transferred makes me laugh still to-day.

Well Peter got his wish from my isolation ward to the maternity section was down the hill quite a distance so I had a absolutely exciting ride in the cold to reach the maternity section. Barbara came down with me and offered to stay if I would like it to, I was not letting her out of my sight.

Within minutes of my arrival my gynaecologist and the paediatrician were on the scene and the labour ward was a buzz they were wheeling in Humidity Cribs and there were 2 sets of staff on standby as you can imagine I was terrified.

Back when I went to school there was no such thing as sex education and although in my Junior year I did a Mothercraft course it never told you anything about what to expect from childbirth ,so all I have heard where the terrifying stories of hours and hours of pain.
