Disposable Nappies
The debate still rages today disposable nappies v cloth nappies.
In my day disposable nappies were only a new phenomenon and considering I was a working mother personally I thought they were the greatest invention ever.
Although all my babies spent their days in disposable nappies while I was at work I still used cloth nappies at night and on weekends.
I have also had friends over the years who have used cloth nappies all the time except when their babies are sleeping believing that there is less chance of the baby being uncomfortable and suffering from nappy rash with the protected dry layer which is built into disposable nappies.
So let’s take a look at the different brands of disposable nappies available and what the consumers have to say about them.
-
Pros: Well known product,1 of the best on the market
- Cons: Very expensive and no real valur for money
- Overall: Good if you have the money every week to fork out for the best but when you go down to 1 income its a little harder
Mamia (Aldi)Pros: Cost effective, reasonable quality
Cons: The newborn size is too big for a newborn, they’re a bit bulkier than some other brands
Overall: I originally bough Mamia nappies because I thought I was getting a good deal for the price. However, I discovered later that if I bought Huggies nappies (which I think are better quality) while they are on special (they are always on special somewhere - Woolies, Coles or Big W), the Huggies are actually cheaper.
Not everything at Aldi is cheaper than the major brands! That said, they are still reasonable quality, and definitely better than something like Babylove or Snugglers.
-
Pros: Cost effective and in bulk packs-Always on sale somewhere
- Cons: Hard to get in chain supermarkets
- Overall: I feel they have really improved their style and fitting since having my 1st to the 2nd child and definatley for the better
-
Pros: They hold a lot of fluid. They have cute designs and come in a range of package sizes.
- Cons: They can be pricey and the size can be a little funny if your baby is longer or a little chubbier around the legs.
- Overall: We find huggies brand great. No leaks…ever! The size problem is solved by just going up to the next size so it’s no great problem really. They come in a range of package sizes so if you think you’re into the next size soon…just buy a smaller packet. They can be expensive but if you buy when they are on sale, they can be great value for money. We’ve tried other brands with moderate success but I have to say Huggies has never failed us so we’ll stick with them.
-
Pros: Don’t get all bulky when in the water like standard nappies, fits well on a variety of sized infants even though the nappies don’t come in many sizes
-
Cons: See below
-
Overall: I put a huggies swimmer on my daughter before going to the pool, not knowing that they are not totally waterproof. At the end of our walk to the pool I lifted her up to find a nice big wet patch in her pram where she had wet herself and it had leaked all the way through. Tip: don’t put these nappies on until the last minute, or put another nappy on over the top until you’re ready to get in the pool!
-
Pros: Good side leakage barries, good absorbancy, secure fit
-
Cons: Price
-
Overall: While I couldn’t tell the difference between Huggies newborn and the cheaper brands, the difference in quality, in my opinion, really emerged once we went up a size in nappies. The Huggies Crawler nappies really are a lot better quality: they fit a lot more securely, feel softer and don’t leak as much as Babylove or Mamia (Aldi brand). While they are more expensive, they are often on special and if you buy up when there’s a special on then they are no more expensive than the cheaper brands.
-
Pros: Good size for a newborn, just as good in functionality as the premium brands
-
Cons: Not as soft as some other brands
-
Overall: When you’re changing a newborn’s nappy every few hours, the Babylove disposables are a great choice. They are not as good quality as say Huggies when you compare them side by side, but there is no difference in functionality for a newborn and they are a lot cheaper. While they don’t feel as soft as some of the other more expensive brands, I don’t think a newborn really notices. They have good absorbancy too and I never had a leak.
